A child's natural hair parted and styled in the chair at KodakStylez in Smyrna, GA

Kids at KodakStylez

Kids natural hair in Smyrna, GA

Whitney works at the pace your child sets.

Wash days, protective styles and treatments for children, at a studio on Spring Road in Smyrna that sits minutes from Atlanta, Vinings and Cumberland, booked as their own appointments with their own times on the calendar rather than squeezed onto the end of somebody else’s.

What a first visit looks like

The pace is set by the child. Whitney talks to your child before she touches their hair, and says out loud what happens next, which sounds like a small courtesy until you have sat beside a kid who remembers one bad detangling session.

Detangling follows the rules from Whitney’s own post, detangling without breakage, which starts with product in the hair for slip, because bone dry hair with nothing on it is where strands snap. Fingers loosen a knot before a comb touches it. The head gets sectioned and clipped, four to eight parts. Every pass runs from the ends toward the roots. A wide tooth comb or a detangling brush, never forced.

Tension gets talked about aloud. If your child says something hurts, that is useful information rather than a complaint to work around, and the grip changes. Breaks happen. A service booked for a set number of minutes can still run long, so leave room after it.

The kids menu

Three services, and when to pick

Gentle, patient styling for our youngest clients.

  • Wash, Condition & Flat Iron

    $10590 min

Booked for a school picture, a holiday, or a week when nobody in your house has the patience for a morning style, which is a more common reason than most parents admit out loud.

Pressed & Ready puts this same service on a monthly plan.

  • Protective Style

    $125+100 min

The one parents pick when they want the hair put away for a stretch, with less combing on school mornings and less negotiation about it, and that second part is usually the real reason it gets booked at all.

  • Hair Treatment

    $45+30 min

The short one. It gets booked when hair feels dry or rough and a full style is not what the day needs.

Booking runs through GlossGenius, same as every other service on this site, and the time attached to each one is the time it is expected to take.

Small things that make the visit easier

  1. Take beads, ballies and old braids out at home if you can get to it, because undoing them in the chair eats the time you booked for the style.
  2. Skip the heavy grease on dry hair the night before.
  3. Bring a snack, water, and one thing that holds attention for longer than ten minutes: headphones, a book, a quiet toy that does not need a table or a plug.
  4. Look at the length of the service you booked before you plan the rest of the day around it.
  5. There is a grace period for late arrivals, a fee once it passes, and a point where a late arrival is counted as a no-show, and all three are written out on the policies page.
  6. A parent or guardian stays with the child through the appointment. Anyone else who comes along counts as a guest under the policy, so confirm it when you book.

The full list of booking rules, late arrivals and guests included, is on the policies page. Read it once.

Questions parents ask

Before you book

What ages is this for?

The kids plans are written for ages 12 and under, whether the program is built around styles or around pressing. The single services are more of a conversation, because the right one depends on the hair and on the child rather than on a birthday. Ask when you book.

Can I stay with my child?

Yes. A parent or guardian stays with the child for the appointment. Anyone else who comes along falls under the guest policy, which sits on the policies page. Check it before you decide who is coming, and confirm the arrangement when you book.

My daughter is tender-headed. What then?

Tell Whitney at the start, not halfway through. The work slows down, the sections get smaller, and more of the combing happens near the ends than near the scalp. Getting through it quickly is not the goal. Slower is fine.

Does a style include the wash?

On the kids plans it does, whether the program is built around styles or around pressing, and every plan says so on its card, while for a single booked service the name on the menu tells you what is in it, and anything past that is a consultation question, which is its own appointment with its own slot on the booking page.

What if we have to cancel?

Cancellations need at least 24 hours of notice, rescheduling is handled online, and the policies page has the rest of it, including what happens inside that window, what counts as a no-show, and how long the grace period runs for a late arrival.

Is a plan worth it if we only come now and then?

Probably not. A plan suits a household that already has a wash day sitting on the calendar most months, rather than one that books a style once the hair has gotten away from everybody. Plans also carry their own terms, written out on the memberships page. Book the services one at a time instead.
