Two Popular Services, Two Different Purposes
Blowouts and silk presses get lumped together a lot, and I understand why. Both leave you with smooth, voluminous hair and both start with a wash and blow dry. But they are genuinely different services designed for different goals, and picking the right one makes a big difference in how happy you are with the results.
What a Blowout Actually Is
A blowout is a wash and blow dry service focused on smoothing and adding volume to your hair using a round brush and blow dryer, without a flat iron pass afterward. The result is smooth, bouncy, and voluminous, but it retains more of your hair's natural texture and movement, especially as it settles over the following day.
A blowout is a great option if you want smoothness and body without going fully straight, or if you are looking for something a little more low maintenance in terms of upkeep between appointments.
What a Silk Press Actually Is
A silk press takes things a step further. After the wash and blow dry, we go through with a flat iron, section by section, to achieve a sleek, straight finish with a beautiful shine. This is the service to book if your goal is maximum straightness and that signature silky movement.
A silk press generally takes more time in the chair than a blowout because of the additional flat iron work, and it also requires a bit more diligence at home to maintain, especially around humidity and nighttime wrapping.
Comparing Heat Exposure
Both services use heat, but a silk press involves an additional pass with a flat iron, which means slightly more cumulative heat exposure in a single appointment. If your hair is already dealing with damage or you are trying to minimize heat use while you focus on strengthening your strands, a blowout might be the gentler choice while you work on your hair's health.
Comparing How Long Each Style Lasts
A well done silk press, properly maintained at night, tends to last one to two weeks before needing a refresh. A blowout typically has a shorter lifespan, especially on very curly or coily textures, since there is less heat manipulation locking the pattern into place, and curl pattern can start to reappear within a few days depending on your hair type and humidity levels.
Which One Should You Book?
Ask yourself what you actually want from the appointment. If the goal is sleek, pin straight, maximum shine for a special event or just because you love the look, book the silk press. If you want smooth, voluminous, healthy looking hair with a little less styling commitment and a bit less heat, the blowout is likely your better option.
There is no wrong answer here, and plenty of my clients rotate between the two depending on the season, their hair's current health, and what they have coming up on their calendar.
Let's Find Your Fit
If you are still not sure which service fits what you are going for, that is a completely normal thing to want help with. You can read more details on both services on our services page, and when you are ready, book an appointment and we can talk through your hair goals before we even turn on a blow dryer.
Both services can leave you feeling gorgeous. The right one just depends on what gorgeous looks like for you this week.
Cost and Time Considerations
Generally, a blowout takes less time in the chair and often costs less than a full silk press, given the additional flat iron work a silk press requires. If you are working with a tighter budget or a tighter schedule, this is a practical factor worth weighing alongside the style itself.
Can You Get Both in the Same Visit?
Technically, a silk press already includes the blowout portion of the service as its first step, so you are not choosing to sacrifice one for the other. The real decision point is simply whether you want to stop after the blow dry or continue on to the flat iron pass for a fully sleek finish.
Maintenance Between Appointments
Both styles benefit from nighttime wrapping, but a silk press generally requires more diligence given its longer intended lifespan. A blowout, since it is expected to last a shorter time, may need less intensive nightly care, though wrapping still helps preserve the smoothness and volume for as long as possible.
Which Is Gentler on Chemically Treated or Color Treated Hair?
If your hair has been through color services and you are trying to minimize additional heat exposure, a blowout is generally the gentler option of the two, since it skips the additional flat iron pass. That said, a well executed silk press with proper heat protectant and correct iron temperature is still a reasonably safe option for most healthy, well maintained hair.
Ask Your Stylist for a Recommendation
If you are torn between the two, describe your hair's current condition, your styling goals, and how much maintenance you are realistically willing to do at home. A good stylist can help match the service to your actual lifestyle rather than just your Pinterest board, which leads to a result you will be happy with well after you leave the chair.
Whichever you choose, both services can leave your hair looking polished, healthy, and beautifully styled when done with care and the right products for your specific hair type.
